The Three Creeks Visual Artisans Alliance

Art is on Display at Hartsville Memorial Library

For the month of August, twenty works by members of The Three Creeks Visual Artisans Alliance will be on display at the Hartsville Memorial Library on College Avenue in downtown Hartsville.

The Three Creeks Visual Artisans Alliance is made up of artists and artisans from Marlboro County. On display in the library are paintings by: Donald Wayne Chavis, Patricia Gehm, Carolyn Karn, Martha C. Rankin, Janice Rozier, Johnsie Stidd, and R. Thomas Wimberly.

This exhibit marks the second straight month the Hartsville Library and Black Creek Arts Council have collaborated to bring an exhibit to the Serpentine Gallery. The exhibit is also a collaborative effort between Black Creek Arts Council and the Marlboro Area Arts Council. The two countywide organizations have been working together over the last 18 months on forming the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail.

Hartsville Idol 2009 Contest Information

♪ No Entry Fee. ♪ Open to all ages. ♪ Solo, Duo or Trio performances are allowed.

Tentative Schedule (based on weather):

Auditions:

August 8 and August 22 from 2 – 4pm (Previous audtions were held on July 25th & August 1st)
Black Creek Arts Center, 116 W, College Avenue, downtown Hartsville.

Performers will sing the song of their choice – acapella - before a panel of judges according to the order in which they sign in.

A maximum of 30 Contestants will be selected to perform the evening of each audition.

Qualifying Rounds:

August 8, August 22 Same dates as Auditions.
Contestants will sing one (1) song of their choice.
Judges will select 16 contestants each week to advance to Quarter Final Rounds.

Quarter Final Rounds:

Top 64 Contestants: August 29 and September 12
Contestants will sing one (1) song of their choice from the ‘50s, ‘60s or ‘70s.
Audience Votes will select 32 contestants to advance to Semi-Finals.

Semi-Final Round:

Top 32 Contestants: September 19
Contestants will sing one (1) song of their choice from the ‘80s, ‘90s or 2000s
Audience Votes will select 16 Contestants to advance to Final Round.

Final Round:

Top 16 Contestants: September 26
Contestants will sing one (1) song of their choice from any era
Audience Votes will determine which contestants receive 1st through 5th place.

Judges:

Chosen by Jeff Martin Entertainment. Judges decisions are final.

Voting:

Hartsville Downtown Development Association is responsible for validation of ballots.
Ballots will be made available to contestants at the end of the contest.

Contestant Responsibilities:

§ Arrive promptly for the 6:15 PM check-in on the pre-assigned competition date.
§ Bring a CD soundtrack to the auditions in the event you are selected as a contestant.
§ Select a different song to perform in each round.
§ Act professionally. Inappropriate behavior will result in disqualification.
§ Omit profanity from songs. If needed, change the questionable word(s).

Hartsville Idol is presented by the City of Hartsville and Hartsville Downtown Development Association.

Rock The Block Info

The 2nd Annual Rock The Block Concert will take place in downtown Hartsville on August 21st from 7pm to midnight.

Noah Stanley, Pale Horse, Friday Night Fist Fight and Mudfish Jones will perform at Hartsville's home for outdoor entertainment, Burry Park.

Merry Go Round at BCAC

Ok, it's not an arts-based event, but it is an event based at the Arts Center.

Over 125 consignors will turnover their new and gently-used Fall/Winter children's clothing to Nique Knockemus and Christy Feldkirchner for the Merry Go Round Resale at the Black Creek Arts Center from August 27th to 29th.

Sizes will range from newborn to 16. All your children's shopping needs can be met, from dancewear to special occasion clothing, shoes to toys, and books to furniture and room decor.

About The Three Creeks Visual Artisans Alliance...

The name "Three Creeks" is taken from the watershed that encompasses most of Marlboro County. Here, three main creeks, Cottingham Creek, Muddy Creek, and Hagins Prong, all flow through this watershed as do tributaries from most of the other creeks in Marlboro County. These creeks are blackwater creeks creating some of the most picturesque scenes in the county. Water and landscapes are two of the most painted subjects by the artists. Since the group has members from all areas of Marlboro County, it was important to find a name that represents the entire county.

The group meets on the third Thursday of each month at 5:00pm in the Marlboro Arts Council's Weatherly-Walker House, located at 303 East Market Street in Bennettsville. Membership is open to anyone- professional or amateur- who is a visual artists residing in Marlboro County.

YMCA Volunteer Camp Visits BCAC

On Tuesday, July 28th, five teenagers and one fearless adult volunteered at the Black Creek Arts Center as part of the Hartsville YMCA's Volunteer Camp. During the week, the campers volunteer at various places throughout the community. This camp is a great way for kids to learn the importance of community involvement. Black Creek Arts Council is pleased to have been a part of this wonderful camp.

July 27th: Two Art Openings in Hartsville

The Hartsville Museum will be hosting an opening reception for The Artfull Bras Project on Monday, July 27th from 5-8pm. This exhibit of unique bras has been created to promote breast cancer awareness.

The Artfull Bras Project will remain at the Hartsville Museum until noon on August 1st. The Hartsville Museum is located at 222 North Fifth Street.

The Midnight Rooster will be hosting an opening of photography by David Childers. The exhibit is titled Fairy Tales. The opening will begin at 7pm.

Subgrant Deadline Set For August 18th

Black Creek Arts Council announces that August 18th is the deadline for subgrant applications for arts-based programs that will take place between January and the end of June 2010. Applications must be postmarked by August 18th or turned in to Bruce Douglas at the Black Creek Arts Center, located at 116 West College Avenue in Hartsville, by 5pm on August 18th.

Organizations must meet not-for-profit criteria, such as being chartered in South Carolina as a non-profit organization. BCAC funds both established and emerging arts-based organizations, as well as individual artists.

BCAC funds events, programs and activities such as: performances and readings; coordination of arts events; workshops and artist residencies; services to artists and organizations; exhibitions; and artistic and managerial development.
