BCAC IS CALLING ALL KIDS TO CAMP CREATIVE
Arts Council hosting two camps in July

Black Creek Arts Council is inviting all young people to attend its summer camps in July. The Arts Council is proud to announce that Michelle Morris, Leslie Pinto, and Bethany Saleeby Perry will be leading two weeks of camps at the Arts Center this summer.

Camp Creative is back for its second year at the Arts Center. “The name symbolizes what we are providing for our students, which is a platform for creativity,” said Bruce Douglas, Executive Director of BCAC. Instructor Leslie Pinto commented, “Summer camps are just as exciting for teachers as children. Spending time with children as they express themselves through art is something that I enjoy. I also take pride in helping them explore different types of art.”

The first week will be July 13-17 and will be for rising 3rd through rising 6th graders. Campers will learn and work in many different media and styles, including: clay, decorative tiles, paper-maché, mosaics, painting, and more. Sessions on acting and jazz will also be incorporated.

The second week will be held from July 20-24 and will be for rising 1st, 2nd, 7th, & 8th graders. Just like the students in the first week, these campers will learn and work with a variety of art genres and media.

The camp will be a great way for students to spend a week of their summer vacation. It will also provide young people who are in town with relatives to meet some new friends.

The camps will conclude with a reception in the Jean & James Fort Gallery at the Arts Center. Family of the campers are invited to attend.

BBQ Contest Opens to the Public at 11am on Saturday

Fifteen cook teams from all over the Carolinas will converge on Cargill Way on May 1st, cook all night, and then, undoubtedly, put the BBQ in Black Creek, Blue Jeans & BBQ.

For one cooker in particular, this festival will be a homecoming of sorts. Joe Scott and his wife, Carrie, will be cooking in both the Anything Butt and BBQ contests. Both Scotts are natives of Hartsville and are eagerly awaiting the chance to compete in front of relatives and lifelong friends in Hartsville.

Cargill Way will also be hosting the Good Living Marketplace. This Saturday should be an exciting Saturday in Downtown Hartsville.

Tastings will be available from over 20 cook-teams in two categories: appetizer/entrée or desserts. Top prize in each category is $100 along with the People’s Choice awards. Prize winners will be announced at 8:30 p.m (just before the I Love My Blue Jeans contest) $15 entry provides you access to each of the cooks' entries, music from Nicki & DaBlooze and the blue jeans contest. Beverages will be available for purchase.

Come out and try amazing appetizers, hearty entrees, and delightful desserts from many Darlington County cookers, caterers and restaurants, as well as from visiting professional cook teams.

BBQ FESTIVAL TO HOST I LOVE MY BLUE JEANS CONTEST

Blue Jeans; everybody’s got a favorite pair. It might be an old pair with holes in the knees or worn out spots around the back pockets. Or maybe it’s a designer pair from Minnie’s, Lulu’s or Flossie Mae’s. No matter the name brand or the condition, Black Creek Arts Council wants to see you in your favorite jeans at Black Creek, Blue Jeans & BBQ on May 1st and 2nd. On Friday night, there’s even a contest where you can strut your stuff in your favorite jeans.

The I Love My Blue Jeans Contest will take place at 8:30 on Friday night on Cargill Way in Downtown Hartsville. “This event is not all about barbeque,” said Judy Haenni of Black Creek Arts Council. “We want to see people proud of the way they look in their favorite blue jeans.”

Celebrity judges from Hartsville’s Army-Navy Store, Lulu’s, Flossie Mae’s, Minnie’s, and CareSouth Carolina will determine the winner of the contest. There will also be a People’s Choice Award given to the fan favorite; because as we know from American Idol, we might not always agree with the judges. “Do you always agree with what Simon Cowell says?," says Bruce Douglas, in referencing the megahit TV show. "Well, you might not agree with Brandi Wheeler either. Not that I am comparing Brandi to Simon.”

To enter I Love My Blue Jeans, call Bruce at the Arts Center or sign up at the ticket booth on Friday night. The entry fee is $10. Prizes include $100 for the judges’ top choice in the men’s and women’s categories and $50 for winning the People’s Choice.

Black Creek, Blue Jeans, & BBQ is a barbeque festival hosted by Black Creek Arts Council. The event will be held on May 1st and 2nd on Cargill Way in Downtown Hartsville (behind the YMCA). The festivities will begin on Friday night at 7pm with the Anything Butt Contest featuring appetizers, entrees and desserts. After the cooking contest, I Love My Blue Jeans will take place. Nicki & DaBlooze, a classic rock, country, and blues band, will be on stage throughout the evening. Friday night tickets are $15.

On Saturday, a $10 ticket will give you the opportunity to enjoy all the barbeque you can eat from several of the region’s top cook teams.

BBQ: Carolina Pit Masters

BLACK CREEK, BLUE JEANS, & BBQ TO HOST CAROLINA PIT MASTERS
2 Day BBQ Festival to Feature Top Cooks in Region

If you like BBQ and want to learn to cook like your favorite restaurant or professional BBQ cook team, Black Creek Arts Council has just what you’re looking for: The Carolina Pit Masters BBQ Cooking School. The Pit Masters will be in Hartsville on May 1st & 2nd for Black Creek, Blue Jeans, & BBQ, with classes being offered on Saturday, May 2nd.

Jack Waiboer, head instructor for the Pit Masters, will be conducting 2 one-hour seminars on Saturday at 10 a.m. & 1 p.m. During that time, Jack will share with you how you can cook like a pro and improve your grilling efforts. Another Pit Master, Garland Hudgens, will be cooking competitively at the BBQ Cook-off on Saturday. The cook-off features more than 15 teams, all vying for cash prizes. The BBQ Cook-off will be blind judged by the South Carolina Barbeque Association’s Certified Judges. There will be all-you-can-eat BBQ for $10 starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

People have come from as far away as Chicago and Canada for the Carolina Pit Masters. During Black Creek, Blue Jeans, & BBQ, those same instructors will be coming to you. Come out and enjoy the fun, food, and entertainment with Black Creek Arts Council and the Carolina Pit Masters on May 1st and 2nd.

The mission of Black Creek Arts Council is to promote and foster the Arts in Darlington County. BCAC’s offices are housed in a state of the art 10,000 square foot facility at 116 West College Avenue. Author Luncheon: Todd Johnson

On Thursday, April 9, 2009, Burry Bookstore and Black Creek Arts Center are co-hosting a book and author luncheon from 12 noon until 2:00 pm. Musician, producer, and author Todd Johnson will be sharing his southern novel The Sweet By and By.

Dubbed as a cross between Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias, this is the story of five women, in different stages of life, living in a small town in North Carolina. They cross paths and share their joys and sorrows as friendships are forged between them. The release date for the book is February 17, 2009.

Todd Johnson grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill with honors in history and receiving his masters from Yale Divinity School. Todd has enjoyed a successful career as a musician and producer. He has performed with a long roster of major artists, including Garth Brooks, Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Marc Anthony, Barry Manilow, Al Jarreau, Michael Bolton, Sarah Brightman and Natalie Cole.
