Canvas of the People Coming to Darlington County

SC Arts Commission Seeking Strategic Planning Input

Planning for healthier economic times, the S.C. Arts Commission invites the public to share their priorities for the arts at the Black Creek Arts Center in Hartsville on March 22nd. The meetings are a part of the 2010 Canvas of the People (www.SouthCarolinaArts.com/canvas2010), a statewide planning process that will inform the 2011-2020 Long-Range Plan for the Arts in South Carolina.

“We want to hear what people value about the arts and how they think the arts can support the economic, educational and creative well-being of their communities,” said Ken May, acting executive director. “We will use that input to help develop the next long-range plan for the arts, which the statewide arts community can use as a road map for the future.”

Forums are taking place in seven locations and are free and open to everyone. Each runs from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration is not required.

Prior to the stop in Darlington County, Canvas of the People meetings will have been held at the Columbia Museum of Art, the Technical College of the Lowcountry in Beaufort, and at the Governor's School for the Arts in Greenville. Following the meeting at Black Creek, the tour will stop at the Aiken Center for the Arts (March 25th), North Charleston City Hall (March 29th) and the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg (April 8th).

Guild for Artists and Artisans to form in the Pee Dee

For the past several months, a group of artists and arts council personnel have been meeting to create a guild for the artisans that live and create throughout the counties that lie along the South Carolina Tobacco Trail. The group now plans to form the Artisans of the South Carolina Tobacco Trail.

The Tobacco Trail runs through the counties of Horry, Darlington, Dillon, Marion, Williamsburg, Clarendon, and Florence.

These meetings have led to the opportunity for artisans to display their work at the Black Creek Arts Center in Darlington County for the month of August 2010. The Artisans of the South Carolina Tobacco Trail will be the featured artists in the Jean & James Fort Gallery. This exhibit and opening reception will mark the public launching of the Artisans of the South Carolina Tobacco Trail.

If you are interested in this opportunity and becoming a founding member of the Artisans of the South Carolina Tobacco Trail, read the guidelines below.

All potential members are selected through a two-part jury process to ensure their craft is of a good standard. For the first stage, works will be reviewed by e-mailed jpeg photographs. Five images should be emailed to PopsGlass@aol.com on or before March 26th. These photos will then be distributed to the jury. Those meeting basic standards will be asked to present their work in person for the final jury stage. This will take place at The South Carolina Tobacco Museum in Mullins on April 9th. Notification will be sent by e-mail within a week of jurying.

Accepted media for jurying are: clay, drawing, fiber glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, natural materials, painting, paper, photography, sculpture, handmade books, and wood. Specialty foods made in the area will also be considered for jurying. The following forms of production are prohibited: crafts produced from commercial kits; commercial patterns, molds and forms; any item violating copyrights; plants (except Bonsai), polished rocks, decoupage and similar items; hobby crafts, shell crafts, country crafts, decal crafts, silk or dried floral arrangements, mass-produced items, commercial re-sales. No work made from commercial stencils or prefabricated forms. No copies of masters, advertisements or widely distributed photos. Work produced in a class or workshop is not eligible to be juried or shown.

Applications for Membership can be obtained by calling or emailing Barbara Streeter (PopsGlass@aol.com, 843.248.4527) or Bruce Douglas (bartscounc@aol.com, 843.332.6234).

More information about the live jury phase and the exhibiting opportunity will be sent out when the jpeg images are received.

The mission of the Artisans of the South Carolina Tobacco Trail is to bring together artists, artisans, and retailers for the benefits of marketing, tourism, education, and shared resources.

The Artisans of the South Carolina Tobacco Trail promotes the tradition of fine visual arts and fine crafts. It serves the professional artists, craftspeople and retailers of the South Carolina Tobacco Trail area, and work representing the area. It is run by and for its members; volunteers do most of the work. A board of directors is elected from the membership.

Dedicated to excellence in craftsmanship, ASCTT promotes the career development of its members through marketing, by operating wholesale/retail shows, maintaining a website, and by publishing a newsletter and an annual brochure which will be placed at interstate welcome centers, local hotels, chambers of commerce, arts groups, etc.

Shows are known for their consistent high-quality standards. This is achieved by a comprehensive jury system for professional membership. The guild also serves as a liaison between its membership and other cultural and educational organizations within the state.

The formation of the Artisans of the South Carolina Tobacco Trail was made possible by Black Creek Arts Council of Darlington County through a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture.

They are used to keep people at a distance.

They keep you from accepting the truth.
They prevent critical introspection.

Barriers disguise the emotion of the situation.
They prevent surpassing the problem.

Barriers are outer coatings that help you fit in.
They are inner coatings that blind your sense of reality.

They cause you to sacrifice individuality,
Allowing you to never see beyond the superficial.

Barriers block the strides for knowledge.
They overshadow the desire for understanding.

Barriers prevent questions.

Sarah Jaillette & Phoebe Smothers

Sisters Sarah Jaillette & Phoebe Smothers will have work on display at the Black Creek Arts Center in February.

Above: A painting by Jaillette

As one would expect, sisters Jaillette & Smothers have a lot in common. They have the same parents. They live in the same town. They both have work in Darlington's Birds Of A Feather, an art and antique gallery that Jaillette and Linda Howle run.

Despite these commonalities, it would be hard to tell these two ladies are sisters when looking at their artwork. Jaillette's signature paintings contain birds and she is also well-known for her seascapes. Smothers, on the other hand, creates mostly non-representational work (see below).

Above: by Phoebe Smothers

BCAC is pleased to be showing the work of Sarah Jaillette and Phoebe Smothers. Both women, along with Linda Howle, were instrumental in the Darlington Artist Crawl in April 2009. Check out their gallery, Birds Of A Feather, at 106 Siskron Street, just off the Square in Darlington.

Art Book of the Week #3

Pollock by Leonhard Emmerling

$14.99

A tragic icon of Abstract Expressionism, Jackson Pollock (1912 -1956) took influences from Picasso and Mexican surrealism and developed his own way of seeing, interpreting, and expressing. Though his name inevitably conjures up images of the drip paintings for which he is most famous, this technique was only developed midway through his career. The progression from his earlier work to his final action paintings, a veritable revolution of painting as a concept, reveals the genius of this tortured artist whom many call the greatest modern American painter.

Find this book at Burry Bookstore on Carolina Avenue in Hartsville.
